The Dangers of Hidden Mold Infestation

mold growing in the corner of the house

Hidden under your sink, and toilets, crawling between the gaps of your tiles, and manifesting inside the humid walls of air ducts, lies a silent killer called mold. Coming in an array of colors between the hues of black to bright yellow, molds are insignificant to look at, in theory; but, if given the right conditions, molds are able to spread in secluded areas in any given space. The perfect climate for these organisms to reproduce is a space that is moist, humid, and filled with substances they can eat; their spores are able to spread near the initial growing area; enabling them to repeat the process over and over.

Molds have 3 types:

1. Allergenic Molds

These molds don’t create life-threatening health risks, but can be irritable to people who are sensitive. Children who are exposed to allergenic molds tend to develop mold allergies in the future.

2. Pathogenic Molds

Producing infections which affect your immune system, and have the ability to grow in the lungs, pathogenic molds cause hypersensitivity pneumonitis; an acute response resembling bacterial pneumonia.

3. Toxic Molds

Molds that are of the toxic variety are the most dangerous; producing mycotoxins, a chemical which is present on or within the surface of a mold spore; creating serious health effects on anyone.

One might think that these organisms can’t do much harm to them or to their homes. With their slime-like appearance, and non-menacing size, many believe that by simply scraping them off the tiles, and rubbing them off the walls, one will eliminate this nuisance. Doing it unprofessionally, however, does not eradicate the problem, but may lead to more home damages, and numerous health risks.

Health Complications

Sinus infections, allergies, and breathing problems, are commonly caused by molds. Often misdiagnosed, and mistreated, these symptoms, if not taken care of correctly, may signify forthcoming harmful diseases. People who are heavily exposed to mold, and mold spores, may experience the following symptoms:

  • Constant Itching
  • Developing Skin Infections or Rashes
  • Having Trouble Breathing
  • Coughing and Wheezing
  • Joint Pain
  • Sinus problems and post-nasal drip
  • Eye Irritation
  • Throat Irritation
  • Sneezing

Although these symptoms can be easily remedied with modern medicine, molds that are not eradicated correctly can cause these symptoms to develop into asthma, or worse – lung cancer.
