The Bible says, “Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath.” The same can be said about spots and spills on your carpet, upholstery, or other fine textiles. Rapid spot removal, combined with frequent vacuuming, proper walk-off mats and regular professional cleaning, will keep your home healthy and looking great. This care will preserve your textile investment for years.

If you do not have the time, talent, or temperament to deal with spot cleaning, we will be happy to assist you over the phone or set up an appointment for a professional spot cleaning!

When you have a spot or spill on your carpet, rug, or upholstery, it is important to remember not to use harsh chemicals. Most of the time, the products for carpet stain removal that are being sold in stores are intended for synthetic carpet fibers, and not for wool, silk, or other premium rug fibers. If you’re new to rug care, we highly recommend against experimenting on expensive or luxurious rugs, in order to avoid potential problems such as colors bleeding together, damage to rug fibers, or other issues that arise from using a harsh spotter.

Testing for Colorfastness

First off, you should always test an inconspicuous area for color-fastness and fiber texture changes. Before you attempt rug stain removal, you should test for colorfastness. To do this, dilute a drop or two of mild detergent in a full glass of cool water, then dip in a clean white towel and make sure to wring it out completely, so that it isn’t soaking wet. Next, press the towel to each color on the rug, just to make sure that you will have no color transfer onto your towel. Don’t rub the area—stick to blotting, because rubbing may press the stain further into the rug or cause damage to fibers. Take note that some rugs are more likely to have color bleeding, and you have to be extremely careful and make sure that there’s no color running. If you find the colors do transfer to the white towel, bring your rug to a professional rug cleaner immediately. If there are no signs of color run or transfer, then you can try to carefully remove the stain.

Instructions for Spot Cleaning

  1. Remove any excess spills from carpet by blotting with a clean white cotton towel and/or by lightly scraping with a spoon, in the direction of the nap of the fiber. It's important to minimize the damage by carefully blotting the stain using clean, white cotton towels. Work from the perimeter of the stain, all the way to the center. Don’t rub the area: be patient and blot very gently, so that you don’t press the stain further into the pile.
  2. Apply Pettyjohn’s Spotter or mild detergent solution lightly to soiled area.
  3. Blot and absorb the spot. Repeat as necessary. *When spot cleaning on upholstery or delicate fibers: apply solution to towel first, then blot.
  4. Rinse using clean towel moistened with water.
  5. Apply a dry, folded, absorbent white towel to affected area.
  6. Leave weighted object on towel overnight.
