Karastan rugs are a very popular choice for many fine homes throughout the Triangle area. With regular maintenance, these fine rugs can look fabulous for many years. The majority of the Karastan rugs we see come through our shop for cleaning or repair are family pieces, either passed down through generations or purchased over 40 years ago! We love being able to preserve the memories these rugs hold for future generations.

Known for quality and durability, Karastan rugs have been made in Eden, North Carolina since the early 1900s.  (Did you know you can contact the manufacturing facility to schedule a tour?!) The wool used to make these rugs is the luxurious Wools of New Zealand. Today, Karastan is the only US-made spool Axminster.

Karastan rug cleaning is very straightforward for the professional rug cleaner. The wool is resilient and can clean up quite beautifully despite normal wear and tear. Karastan Rug Cleaning and Maintenance Tips

It is possible to spare your Karastan rug from further damage.

• Do not use beater bars. Instead, use a vacuum with hard surface suction only.
• Use caution when vacuuming the rug to prevent causing damage to the fringes.
• Loose or torn fringes can be replaced or repaired.
• Worn side cords can be easily replaced.
• Karastan wool rugs are very durable and can be successfully spot cleaned when using proper procedures. Blot, don’t scrub!

Katie did a PHENOMENAL job on my vintage, yellow, cotton velvet couch. We had greasy/ashy stains on the couch caused by remodeling work that wasn’t well isolated and Katie was able to get every stain out and the couch looks brand new! Truly cannot recommend highly enough!!

I love old rugs. I purchased a worn 1920s Mahal this past summer and my dogs decided to pee all over it to make it theirs. I found a recommendation for Pettyjohn’s on a website dedicated to the proper cleaning of old wool rugs. I called them and they helped me understand the process that would need to be done to get them clean and smell-free. I picked up the rug yesterday and it looks amazing and doesn’t have any of dog odor left! I will happily drive the hour each way in the future to have them care for my treasured Persian rugs.

I was in the process of redecorating a small living area in my home. My area rug which is 7 years old, had never been cleaned. I took it to PettyJohns to have it restored. The people there were soo sweet and friendly. It was my first time using their services, but they made me feel like i had known them for years. I was delighted that they were knowledgeable enough to offer me a new rug pad which I hadn’t thought of. My rug was ready when they said it would be, and it was super clean and plush when I got it back. I am well pleased and highly recommend that you check them out!

Katie at Pettyjohn’s did a specialty cleaning of two Korean silk table runners my father brought back from Korea in 1953–70 years ago. They were dirty, with stains, and had not been properly stored or cleaned. She did a thorough review, gave me lots of information, we agreed on how to proceed, she explained what she had done and the complications and options for further work–she did a great job. They have great sentimental value for our family and now we are able to display and enjoy them.

Had tomato based stain on a very expensive new area rug. Called Ethan Allen who sold us the rug and they recommended PettyJohn’s. They were quite expensive, but they just returned the rug and the stain is no longer visible. Saved quite a bit of money not having to replace the rug.

Pettyjohn’s is simply the best in the trade for general rug cleaning/restoration, upholstery cleaning or stain removal. They have extensive knowledge and training which is highly beneficial when working with heirloom or delicate fibers. I don’t trust anyone else. I have used them to remove red wine stains on a chair cushion and rug as well as a pet stain on a hand woven rug. I call them whenever I am in doubt as to how to pre-treat a rug or an upholstery item. Their waiver states they cannot guarantee results however Perryjohn’s has never failed me!

Amy, Katie, Andrew and the crew are phenomenal people. Not only are they good at what they do, they take pride in what they do. My elderly father has incontinence and had more than a few accidents on my car’s driver side seat. Everyone I called quoted me a low price and then said this was a battle I’d be fighting for a long time. No one could guarantee they’d be able to remove the smell.Somehow while googling I found Pettyjohns and decided to call them. I spoke to Katie and then Amy who quoted what sounded like an expensive price. But I figure you get what you pay for and their website guaranteed their work. I am so beyond glad I went to see them. Not only did they get the smell out, but they also discovered the urine was eating away at the cotton fibers in the seat and it was about to snap. They took the time to stitch this back together and save me an extremely costly and difficult repair. And they didn’t charge me anything extra for it either. They also gave me excellent advice on how to prevent this from occurring again without embarrassing my dad.Like I said, they take pride in their work.On top of all this, they are just very *nice* people. This family owned business has just earned another customer for life. I look forward to working with them again!

I hired Pettyjohns to treat my new oriental rugs with Fiber Protector a few months ago. They were extremely professional and demonstrated a high level of expertise on the product. I hesitated getting the treatment as I just paid for my new rugs and didnt really want to spend more money but after discussing with them, they convinced me of the value. And I am SO HAPPY I listened. One of my dogs threw up on the rug and I didn’t see it until the next day when it was partially dried. The vomit basically sat on top of the rug fibers and I was able to easily remove it with no permanent stain. The protector does not change the feel of the rug at all. I highly recommend PettyJohns and the FiberProtector product for your rugs and carpets! Its worth the cost and wish I knew about Pettyjohns years ago.

Hands down an AMAZING company. From the customer service side of things to the actual cleaning of the upholstery it was professional, quick, and affordable. They had excellent communication from start to finish and were able to restore two chairs that were badly stained. They came back looking brand new with no stains or odor. Pettyjohn’s removed a large red wine stain from our brand new sofa cushion. When we dropped off the cushion they thoroughly explained their cleaning and fabric protection process. They gave us the costs for the cleaning, the protective spray, and treating the rest of the sofa – very transparent and worth the cost. The work was done in the time frame that worked best for us. I researched quite a bit to find a place that could professionally clean my Oriental rugs. They were very dirty after years of wear and tear and I doubted they would ever get entirely clean, but I gave Pettyjohn’s a shot! They did not disappoint! I had a great experience with Pettyjohn’s. I purchased a vintage oriental carpet at an antique store and wanted it cleaned before I put it in my home. The store recommended Pettyjohn’s for this type of rug.When I dropped the rug off, I had the opportunity to meet Robert, the owner. He is very charismatic and gave me a tour of the facility. I felt like I was on an elementary school field trip – it was great. He explained what each of the machines did and that they try to be as green as possible – there is a cistern to collect rain water! They not only clean rugs and carpets, but also sofa cushions and other upholstery items.My rug was ready before the original date they had provided. All of the people that work at Pettyjohn’s are very friendly and professional. They seem to take a lot of pride in their work and their reputation. I would definitely use Pettyjohn’s again the future.

I appreciate Pettyjohn’s great service and using environmental supportive techniques. They do so much more than just rugs! While working with a client I accidentally spilled oil on my jeans.
