Silk Rug Maintenance

Silk rugs are vastly different than wool rugs for a number of reasons. This makes caring for them a unique challenge. However, there are a number of things you can do to preserve your silk rug for years to come. Given the proper care, silk rugs are among the longest-lasting floor coverings available. While a professional cleaning is the most effective way to keep your rug in stellar shape, there are a few simple rules to follow in between cleanings.

Silk Rug Dos

  • Treat stains immediately: Clean up spills right away to minimize or prevent permanent damage and discoloration on your silk rug. After a spill, immediately blot the liquid with a towel. Club soda can also help release liquids.
  • Choose blended fabrics: When buying a new rug, look for wool-silk blends. they repel stains more effectively than pure silk rugs.
  • Clean your rug regularly: Vacuuming with a brushless suction head vacuum or sweeping them with a broom will remove dirt and debris. Alternatively, you can shake rugs out to remove dirt.
  • Rotate rugs frequently: Area rugs often see inconsistent use, especially when placed in sitting areas. To prevent your rug from wearing unevenly, rotate your silk rug twice a year.

Silk Rug Don’ts

  • Never use hot water or strong chemicals: Hot water can cause permanent damage to your rug. Likewise, chemicals stronger than a water and white vinegar solution can cause discoloration. If you have a tough stain, call Pettyjohn’s.
  • Don’t put your rug in a high-traffic area: A lot of foot traffic causes rugs to wear out quickly. You’re also making rugs more susceptible to stains. Silk rugs should be decorative pieces, not rugs meant to absorb dirt and grime.
  • Don’t vacuum from end to end: Silk rugs often have decorative fringes that can get caught in your vacuum. Avoid damaging your silk rug by vacuuming side to side.
  • Don’t use heat to dry a silk rug: Excess heat can cause serious damage to your silk rug. Don’t use a clothes dryer or hair dryer to remove moisture. Always air dry. Similarly, don’t put your silk rug close to fire sources, as heat can cause materials to shrink and fade.

Our Silk Rug Cleaning Process

Pettyjohn’s has been Raleigh’s source for rug cleaning for over 25 years. We know how to clean your rugs safely and effectively. We recommend sending your rugs in for professional cleaning at least once every 12-18 months. That can change to twice a year or more if you have pets, allergies, or put rugs in high-traffic areas.

When you call Pettyjohn’s for a rug cleaning, you have the option for pickup from your home, or you can drop it off at our office. We clean the rug at our facility, which allows us to carry out a number of different treatments in one session. We can also clean both sides of your rug if necessary. Once your rug is looking and smelling fresh, we’ll let you know and arrange to get your rug back to you and situated in your home.
